Our Organic Certified Shea Butter, connected to an empowering women's co-operative in Burkina Faso, Sudan.

Surrounded by nature and acres of Karité trees, lays the small village of Diarabakoko, in Burkina Faso, where we source our organically certified Shea butter. Although Burkina Faso translates as the "land of the honest man", the harvesting and processing of the Shea fruits has been done by women - since the beginning of times. Therefore, many co-operatives of women have formed in these rural areas of Sudan, giving them the opportunity to contribute to their family’s livelihood and provide their communities with an improved quality of life.

With an increasing demand for Shea butter, over 16 million women living on the so-called Shea belt (that extends from Senegal to Uganda) work during the summer season, harvesting the fruits of the Karité trees. In places like Diarabakoko, women are in charge of coordinating the whole harvesting process: from removing the fruit flesh, washing the kernels and letting them dry in the sun. Then roasting, grounding and kneading them to create the Shea paste that will later be boiled up and skimmed off to reveal the beautiful shea butter we all know & love. 

Since 2019, this project has become fair trade, meaning that a fair price is paid for the trade of this organic Shea butter. This trade helps more than 4,000 families living in 21 different villages in Burkina Faso. And offers them a reliable distribution channel, and a long-term contract that guarantees a secure and steady income. Their additional profits are invested In helping deliver initiatives such as training, health programs, drinking water and maintenance + development of the 21 villages. In last year’s activities, it is important to highlight the new equipment that Schools received & the first aid kits that were made available - to improve the health & education of the children.
