Frank's Story: A Decade in the Making
From Roaccutane Side Effects to BBC-Documented Skincare Brand to British Beauty History
19 years old. Unable to walk from joint pain. Skin barrier destroyed. All from prescription treatments meant to clear my acne.
Having developed acne later than my peers at 19 years old, it was a difficult & lonely time navigating what skincare was & how I could help my skin. I would buy a basket of new skincare products every month that claimed to clean & clear, but nothing really worked or stopped my skin from continuously breaking out.
After a few years of struggling & my condition out of control, I visited my GP. They confirmed & diagnosed me with severe acne & put me on a course of topical and oral medications. These were changed and swapped for other treatments after a few months when my skin became resistant & they became ineffective. However, each time my skin barrier became more damaged & irritated - I developed Dermatitis & Rosacea as a result.
As a last resort, I was referred to a dermatologist in a hospital who prescribed Isotretinoin (also known as Roaccutane).
From the first time I swallowed the pill, I instantly felt the draining effects on my body. Within just a few days, the side effects revealed themselves - my skin became desert-dry, my lips cracked constantly, joint pain made simple movements uncomfortable, and unable to walk properly. Sudden low mood changes (side-effect) kept me isolated in my room, while I hoped the condition cleared.
After just a few weeks on the medication, I decided my health and longevity was more important than my skin's appearance.
I immediately stopped all medications and embarked on my own journey to find a natural, kinder solution.

The Journey
Traveling the world to uncover ancient wisdom that proved effective in clearing skin holistically across centuries. Those discoveries changed everything - from Bali to Arizona to Iceland - and shaped formulations & ingredient sourcing.
2010-2014
My first step: learn everything
I spoke to dermatologists, pharmacists, aestheticians & chemists - anyone expert who would share their knowledge & experience on breakouts so I could better understand the issue at root.
I read antiquated skincare literature from the 1800s alongside modern research papers, absorbing everything I could about ingredients, formulations, and how optimal, healthy skin truly functions.
But textbook knowledge wasn't enough. I felt information was missing & needed real-world wisdom.
2014-2017
Research & Realisation
During my semester breaks at university, I began traveling to learn firsthand.
While visiting different countries, I discovered multifunctional balancing ingredients from agriculture experts - elders that I met gave me a new perspective in understanding stressed, reactive skin through an inter-connected, holistic approach.
I documented all my learnings & used my own acne-prone skin as the test subject to ensure the remedies being created did not further stress my skin while tackling spot concerns.
2017-2019
The Breakthrough: Creating Natural Acne Solutions That Work
Here's what I found: Typical acne treatments work against your skin, not with it. When skin is already stressed, aggressive treatments push it into defensive mode -producing more oil, becoming more sensitive, breaking out even more. A vicious cycle.
Through trial & error, I created 5 skincare products alongside a carefully designed routine that started to clear & calm my skin in just a few weeks.
With continued use, it helped resurface my acne scars, smooth my skin texture, brighten stubborn blemishes - but most importantly achieve a balanced skin state that freed me from recurring breakouts.
With the products successfully transforming my skin & that of my peers from university, I decided to launch Frank's Remedies to help others who suffer with a similar experience & need a real solution, that's kind to skin.
Within months of launching, word spread. Then BBC came calling
2020: We launched 🚀
BBC producers caught wind of Frank's journey in 2019 during our soft launch & invited him on 'The Customer Is Always Right' showcasing UK's Top Inventions and putting them to the test with first-time candid customer reviews.

THE PROBLEM
Conventional 'spot/acne-focused' skincare typically focuses on surface-level concerns, using harsh actives and acids to target spots but don't take into account the overall stressed-skin-state, which can become agitated through aggressive treatment.
If the product is too harsh for sensitive skin (especially already feeling reactive), it can overload the skin and trigger breakouts due to the extra stress.
'DEFENSE MODE'
When skin enters the stressed-skin-state it can go into defensive mode, with a heightened state of reactivity which can show itself through redness, soreness, extra oil compensation, or dry, uncomfortable skin. Oh, and more spots!
THE SOLUTION
Frank began experimenting with different ingredient combinations to investigate not only how the physical result of the product appeared on skin but also how it made skin feel from 1-20 days, documented through a photo journal.
The result helped produce a range of skincare that works in support of stressed skin and not against it - helping ensure skin feels comfortable & at peace with the essential care it requires.
